Medicare Part D Education & Enrollment
Medicare Part D is the Prescription Drug Assistance Program that was established by federal legislation in 2003 and launched on January 1, 2006. This program is available to anyone eligible for Medicare Part A or Part B, providing essential coverage for prescription medications.
Key Features of Medicare Part D
Enrollment Options: Individuals with Medicare can enroll in Part D coverage through:

-
A stand-alone Part D plan
-
A Medicare Advantage plan
Important Enrollment Periods:
Initial Enrollment Period: New Medicare beneficiaries have a seven-month window to enroll in a Part D plan, which includes:

-
Three months before their 65th birthday
-
The month of their birthday
-
Three months after their birthday

Open Enrollment Period: From October 15 to December 7 each year, individuals can review their options and make changes to their Part D plans for the upcoming calendar year.
Late Enrollment Penalty: If you choose not to enroll in Part D and have no other prescription drug coverage, you may be subject to a penalty for late enrollment.
What to Review During Open Enrollment
When evaluating your Part D options during the open enrollment period, be sure to consider the following:

-
Convenience: Check which pharmacies are included in your plan's network.
-
Cost: Understand all potential out-of-pocket expenses associated with your plan.
-
Coverage: Ensure that the plan's formulary includes all of your necessary prescriptions.
Special Enrollment Situations
-
If you lose your creditable drug coverage, you have 63 days from the termination date to enroll in a Part D plan without facing a penalty.
-
Depending on your income, you may qualify for the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) or "Extra Help" program, which can assist with premium costs, drug expenses, and help you avoid the "donut hole."
