Respecting Choices Training - January 2006

Recently, the Area
Agency on Aging District 7’s (AAA-7) Regional
Ombudsman Program received a grant from the Scioto
Foundation to assist with the implementation of a
project entitled, “Respecting Choices-Advanced Care
Planning for the Scioto County Area.”
On December 1 & 2, 2005, phase I of the project was
implemented with Maggie Selby, RN, MSN, of Comfort
Care Partners providing the training. Thirteen
community professionals were trained as Advanced Care
Planning Facilitators to assist senior citizens in the
Scioto County area with advanced care planning. The
purpose of the project is to improve the quality of
end-of-life care for older adults by assisting them to
have conversations about advanced care planning. This
is done by shifting the focus of end-of-life decision-
making away from the completion of a document and
toward facilitating discussion about the senior’s
values and preferences.

The AAA-7 Ombudsman Program and Comfort Care Partners
will be developing additional workshops for 2006. If
you’d like more information about advanced care
planning or would be interested in becoming an
Advanced Care Planning Facilitator, please contact
Kaye Mason-Inoshita, Ombudsman Program Director, at
