J. Floyd Dixon Grant Provides Free Dental Care to Children & Grandparents

AAA7 is very appreciative of the grant received from the J. Floyd Dixon Foundation for the Intergenerational Dental Program in Jackson County. The Appalachian Dentistry Program of the Ohio State University College of Dentistry has been expanded to include grandchildren living with their grandparents, who reside in Jackson County, Ohio, thanks to a grant received by Area Agency on Aging District 7, Inc. during fiscal year 2004-2005. The expansion has provided children and their grandparents the opportunity to have access to dental services such as sealants, cleanings, fillings, and extractions provided by the school’s existing mobile dental unit. The project is a significant intergenerational program that benefits a span of generations and assists grandchildren and grandparents who are economically disadvantaged in receiving much needed dental care.

The mobile clinic has been able to schedule four sessions. Two have already been held in May, one will be held on July 21st and one will be held on August 9th. The clinics can serve a total of 88 individuals. The First Presbyterian Church of Jackson graciously opened their community room for use by the clinic. The room offered privacy, easy access to water and bathroom facilities and is accessible according to the American with Disabilities Act.

In preparation for the clinic, Area Agency on Aging District 7, Inc. (AAA7) has contacted the Jackson County Jobs and Family Services Department, the Jackson County Family and Children First Council, the local school system and Appalachian Nutrition Network’s Summer Lunch Program. Through these contacts, a referral network has been established within the county. Organizations and agencies have been provided with information regarding the specific services available during the clinic and the contact information for making an appointment. Appointments can be scheduled for the July 21st session and the August 9th session by calling the Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-582-7277, Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and asking for Rita Tracewell. Please call and set up an appointment if you are a grandparent raising a grandchild or grandchildren and you and the children are in need of dental care. The target participants are those grandchildren and grandparents currently living in a “kinship” care situation.

OSU senior year dental students provide dental care with a sensitive touch.
